Ancient Grassland Resources

Listed and linked below are a series of useful and / or interesting resources in relation to ancient grasslands that I have stumbled upon. Its a short list for now but I will add to it as I go along.

  • Discussion Paper on Ancient Grasslands In 2024 Plantlife commissioned the British Ecological Society to develop a practical definition of 'ancient grasslands'. The definitions proposed are what I am aligning my studies against. There is also abundant information and further research questions in relation to ancient grasslands presented. Well worth a read!
  • Waxcap Grassland Research at Aber Waxcap grasslands are often ancient grasslands managed by regular mowing or grazing. This site provides abundant information on the habitat type as well as management recommendations and a list of useful links too.

  • The Intermingled Pot A website by Martin Allen who is currently in the process of writing a book called 'Finding England's Ancient Grasslands' inspired by an occasion where an important ancient grassland local to Martin was lost, owing to the absence of protecton afforded to the habitat type.
  • Irish Plants A website by Jake Dalzell who is currently studing for a PhD in fungal communities across a connectivity and restoration gradient. A fascinating site that incidentally is the site that inspired me to use Neocities to host mine!
  • Josh Styles Josh is a brilliant botanist who is interested in the conservation of ancient grasslands (and plants and habitats in general!). At present he is working on the AGIS dyer's greenweed (Genista tinctoria), information can be found on his social media accounts.
  • Craig Llewellyn Craig is an experienced ecologist who is advocating for the classification of ancient grasslands as an Irreplaceable Habitat. Linked is a CIEEM article he wrote on the matter. I often find his posts on LinkedIn and elsewhere to be insightful.
